Shipman & Goodwin LLP announced that Joette Katz '77 has joined the firm as a partner in the Business Litigation Practice Group. Prior to joining the firm, Katz served as the commissioner of the Connecticut State Department of Children and Families for eight years. Prior to that, she was an associate justice on the Connecticut Supreme Court for over 18 years. Katz will work out of Shipman & Goodwin's Hartford and Stamford offices.
Saxe Doernberger & Vita, P.C. announced the promotion of Michael Pepe '08 to partner. Pepe's practice focuses on representing contractors and real estate developers in insurance coverage litigation. Pepe works at the firm's Northeast headquarters in Trumbull, Connecticut.
Thomas H. Dooley '64, a former state representative and Vernon Town Council member, died on January 5, 2019. Read his obituary.
Boyle Shaughnessy Law announced the promotion of Brian Doherty '13 to shareholder on January 7, 2019. Doherty, who works out of the firm's Worcester, Massachusetts office, focuses on commercial and business litigation. Previously, Doherty served as a graduate judicial intern for . Judge Timothy Hillman of the United States District Court, District of Massachusetts.

Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP announced the promotion of Kara Kuchar '06 to partner on January 7, 2019. Kuchar, whose practice focuses on regulating financial service providers, has been with the New York firm since 2006.
Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC promoted Kathryn Foley '09 to director on January 1, 2019. Foley assumed her new position after being elected at a general meeting in December, 2018. Foley, who specializes in Intellectual Property law, works in the Burlington, Vermont location of the New England-based firm.
Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan Americas, Inc. announced the appointment of Thomas Welsh '80 as general counsel, effective January 1, 2019. Welsh previously worked as principle attorney at Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C.
The Law Offices of Edward Nusbaum announced the promotion of Harold Haldeman '74 to partner on January 7, 2019. Haldeman has worked as an attorney for the Westport, Connecticut-based family law firm since in 1999. Before starting his legal career, Haldeman served in the United States Navy for 27 years, eventually serving as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps after graduating law school.
Attorney General-elect William Tong announced the appointment of Erik Lohr '02 as associate attorney general for legal counsel. Lohr previously worked as an assistant attorney general, leading the Employment Rights Department. He has also been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Law since 2007. Lohr will assume his new duties when Tong is sworn in on January 9, 2019.
