The accomplishments, milestones, awards and news of UConn School of Law alumni:
Sheryl Starr '78 has been promoted to managing partner at Bernkopf Goodman LLP. Starr has worked at the Boston-based firm for more than 30 years. She will oversee the firm's day-to-day operations, working closely with the Executive Committee, in her new role.
Kelly Frye Barnett '14 was honored at the 2018 "100 Women of Color" gala, presented by Eleven28 Entertainment. The gala was held on March 16, 2018, at the Bushnell Theatre in Hartford. The gala honors contributions by women of color to business, education, entrepreneurship and public service in Connecticut. Barnett works as an associate in the Business Litigation Group in the Hartford office of Robinson & Cole LLP.
Christie D. Jean '14 has been elected to the Executive Board of the George W. Crawford Black Bar Association. The association is a volunteer statewide organization of attorneys, judges, and law students working to increase the role and number of black lawyers in Connecticut. Jean works at Robinson & Cole LLP, where she is a member of the firm's Public Finance Group.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has appointed Stephen M. Morelli '86 chairman of the Workers' Compensation Commission. Morelli has been a member of the commission since 2012. He previously served as the deputy mayor of Berlin, Connecticut, and was also the chairman of Berlin's Ordinance Committee.
James Ruel Jr. '99 and his wife Abiah welcomed a daughter, Rose Ruel, on April 30, 2018. Additionally, Rose is the granddaughter of Debra Ruel '84.
Kevin Sullivan 82' will leave his position as commissioner of revenue services for the state of Connecticut on May 10, 2018, to take a position with Verus Analytics, based in Scottsdale, Arizona. He has headed the Department of Revenue Services since 2011, after serving as a Connecticut state senator from 1986 to 2004, as the state senate's president pro tempore from 1997 to 2004, and as lieutenant governor from 2004 to 2007. He previously served on the West Hartford Town Council and as the town's mayor and deputy mayor.
Arthur Spada '57, the former Connecticut State Police commissioner, died on April 26, 2018. Read his obituary.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has nominated Jennifer Macierowski‘95 to serve as a judge on the state Superior Court. Macierowski has worked as the chief legal counsel for the Connecticut General Assembly's Senate Republican Caucus since 1999. She is a member of the Connecticut Health Information Technology Advisory Council and serves as chairwoman of the Windsor Board of Ethics.
Jason Ketchen ‘99 has been hired as general counsel for PanAgora Asset Management, the firm announced April 25, 2018. Ketchen, who was also invited to join the firm’s Operating Committee, will be based in Boston. He previously served as general counsel to Folger Hill Asset Management and Geode Capital Management.
