This course will provide students with a working knowledge of estate planning. Estate planning provides for the management and transfer of a client's property, in the event of the client's death or incapacity, at the smallest financial and emotional cost to the client's family. The course will include an overview of the federal and state estate and gift tax regimes, and will then focus on the issues involved in the design, drafting and implementation of estate plans, and the legal and non-legal considerations faced by the drafting attorney. During the course, students will prepare a comprehensive estate planning memorandum, outlining a proposed estate plan for a hypothetical client.
