This course examines the free speech clause of the First Amendment. Our wide-ranging inquiry will include diverse topics such as the advocacy of illegal action, campaign finance, commercial speech, defamation, hate speech, prior restraints, symbolic speech and the evolving relationship between technology and speech. We will supplement our review of key legal precedents with non-case law materials.
