Diversity Week, the annual celebration of diversity and inclusion at the UConn School of Law, will expand this year into Diversity Month.
The campus-wide series of events, first organized in 2011, showcases the law school’s commitment to offering a safe and diverse environment. The celebration, focusing on the ways that embracing a diverse campus culture only strengthens it, is organized by the student-run Diversity Alliance and supported by several area law firms.
Student organizations will host a variety of events, starting on March 2 with Women of the Law, a networking dinner for students sponsored by the Diversity Alliance and the Women’s Law Students Association. Other events will include a Day of Service to the community, several panel discussions, and a concluding Talent Showcase. A schedule of events is posted here.
“The expansion of Diversity Week into Diversity Month is to avoid slipping into a performance of diversity,” said Mallori Thompson, co-chair of the Diversity Alliance. More time to develop meaningful conversations will mean a greater impact, she said. “All of our events are aimed at either solving a problem, creating a network, highlighting our differences -- and of course having fun while doing it.”
Shipman & Goodwin LLP, which has been the exclusive sponsor of Diversity Week since 2013, will continue to be its leading supporter. Other sponsors this year will include Pullman & Comley LLC, Wiggin and Dana LLP, McCarter & English LLP, Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP, and Cohen and Wolf PC.
