Summer Term

The University of Connecticut School of Law offers a number of intensive, full-length courses during the months of June and July offering students an opportunity to focus intensively on a particular topic in a course that meets very often over a short period of time. These courses, taught by members of our own world-class faculty as well as prominent visiting professors from other law schools, allow students to earn credit toward their JD degree while working in summer jobs. Classes are taught at the Law School's beautiful 21-acre campus, which is listed on the National Register of Historic sites, in the historic West End of Hartford, Connecticut's capital city.

Courses are open to day and evening students as well as students from other accredited law schools. Should it turn out that a particular course fails to attract a sufficient number of students, we may have to postpone until a later term or cancel the course. Registrants will be notified by the Registrar's office should this situation occur.

Schedule

This summer there will be two sessions: June Session and July Session. The dates of the June Session are May 21-June 25. The dates of the July Session are July 2-August 7.

Registration

Registration for both sessions opens FEBRUARY 27, 2012.  Students may continue to register for courses through the first day of classes, though students are strongly urged to register as soon as possible as students are accepted on a space-available basis. Please note that a lottery for limited enrollment courses will be conducted based on enrollment forms received by MARCH 2, 2012.  Registration materials are available online.  Any questions about the schedule of classes should be directed to the Office of the Registar.

The University reserves the right to discontinue, postpone or cancel classes, or change staff or meeting hours, if and as conditions warrant. Instructors reserve the right to reschedule individual class meetings. Every effort will be made to notify students of canceled courses or changes in meeting hours prior to the start of classes.

On Line Registration Forms

Registration for Summer Term courses is done online.  Students may request forms in an alternate format from the Office of the Registrar (contact information listed above).  All required forms must be submitted before a student will be enrolled.

Class size

The University reserves the right to limit the number of students that may register in courses. Oversubscribed courses will be waitlisted. Students who are not accommodated will be notified promptly.

Cost

The fee for summer study is $743 per credit for JD students, $983 for U.S. Legal Studies LL.M. Students and $1091 per credit for Insurance Law LL.M. students. Students will be billed. The deadline for the payment of fees is May 4, 2012 for the June session. For the July session, the deadline is June 22, 2012. Students who register after this date will be billed upon receipt of enrollment request (with payment due upon receipt of bill). Checks may be made payable to: "University of Connecticut School of Law".

Students who have applied for a loan for summer study will be given a deferment after registering and submitting the appropriate loan application to the Student Finance Office. The charges for summer courses are fees, not tuition and as such, under University procedures these fees do not qualify for tuition waiver (e.g., Vietnam veterans or Senior Citizen) nor do they qualify for consideration of tuition remission. Students must be registered for at least three (3) credits to qualify for private loans. A student's actual eligibility is determined by the lender and can be no more than the cost of attendance. The student loan will not be processed until after a student is registered. Applications for 2011 financial aid are available on the Student Finance Web site.

June and July Term students without a current and valid student parking decal may purchase a summer parking decal at a $5.00 charge from the School of Law Business Office (this permit will be valid for both summer sessions).

Refund of fees

Refund of fees will be made only to students who withdraw from summer courses in accordance with the proscribed withdrawal procedures because of illness or other compelling reason as deemed acceptable by the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. Upon notification from the Associate Dean, the Business Office will begin the process of securing a refund.

Students withdrawing prior to the start of classes will be entitled to 100% of refundable fees paid. Students withdrawing after the start of classes will be entitled to pro-rata refund of fees as follows: First day, 90% of fees will be refunded, second day, 60% of fees will be refunded; within the third or fourth day, 50% of fees will be refunded; within the fifth through eighth day, 25% of fees will be refunded; after the eighth class there will be no refund.

Students from other law schools

Students in good standing in ABA accredited law schools other than the University of Connecticut School of Law, are welcome to register for summer courses. These students must submit with their enrollment materials a letter from their school certifying that they are in good standing. Any/all credits taking while visiting the University of Connecticut School of Law during the summer term, will be included in the maximum number of credits a student can earn as visitor to the School of Law—that limit is 32 credits, or the equivalent of 2 full time semesters. (Students considering visiting the University of Connecticut School of Law for terms in addition to (or instead of) the summer term, must meet visiting student requirements as established by the Admissions Committee.) Students who have not yet begun their law studies and students from non-accredited law schools are not eligible for the summer courses. Students from other graduate programs are permitted to attend with the permission of the Associate Dean for Administration and Finance, and the Dean of their home school. Grading for those students other than those matriculating at this or another law school shall be on a pass-fail basis only.

Auditors

Students may register for courses as an auditor with the permission of the instructor and the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. Auditors are subject to all applicable fees.  An audit request form is available online.
