Externship at Department of Justice/Executive Office for Immigration Review, Immigration Court, Hartford

Description

The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop research,writing, and analytical skills. The successful applicant will also gain substantive knowledge of immigration law.

 Assignments, which will vary depending on the Court's docket, will generally include:

- In-depth research and analysis of novel legal issues;

- Drafting of decisions taken under advisement; and

- Review of the Record of Proceedings.

 The intern will work directly under the supervision of the Judicial Law Clerk hired through the  Attorney General's Honors Program.

- Work 12-15 hours per week.

- Strong research and writing skills are required.

- Interest in immigration law required.

- Background check will be performed

- Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

- Prior knowledge of immigration law is helpful, but not absolutely necessary.

Health Care Advocacy Committee Externship Opportunity

Advocacy Committee Externship Opportunity

Students interested in health care policy and the legislative process are encouraged to apply to the Connecticut Public Health Association’s internship program for academic credit, which runs in the spring during the Connecticut General Assembly’s  legislative session. An intern typically will:

Take a tour of the Capitol building and legislative office building.

Track bill activity.

Draft memoranda that analyze bills of interest to CPHA.

Research upcoming legislative initiatives.

Write CPHA Advocacy Committee communications, including action alerts.

Prepare and update legislative fact sheets.

Draft letters to legislators.

Submit written testimony.

Attend and give oral testimony at public hearings.

Observe legislative debate on the floor of the state House of Representatives and Senate.

Attend quarterly CPHA Advocacy Committee meetings and other external meetings as a representative of CPHA.

Draft legislative updates to the CPHA membership.

Review CPHA’s legislative priorities.

Assess efficacy of advocacy efforts at close of legislative session.

Interns will learn about the overall legislative process and basic tenets of general public health advocacy. A culminating project will be required, to be shaped with the individual intern.
