International Students
There are several employment authorization steps which are specific to an individual student's citizenship and immigration status. An employment authorization checklist is available to assist students in assuring that they have completed all required pre-employment paperwork. Students must complete all documents listed for any category for which they qualify.
Employment Eligibility
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires the verification of employment eligibility for all employees via the I-9 form. After accepting the tentative offer of a specific on-campus job opportunity, the student will be asked to present documents which verify identity and employment eligibility to the Student Employment Program staff.
- Permanent Resident - An Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph may be used to verify both identity and employment eligibility. The student may also present a document to verify identity, such as a driver's license or school I.D. card with photo, AND one document to establish employment eligibility, such as a social security card, in addition to the Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph. Resident Aliens must also complete and submit a W-9 form.
- International Students must present proper passport, Immigration and Naturalization Service and institutional documentation to certify their employment eligibility. They must also complete a Foreign National Information Form.
- F-1 Visa holders are eligible for on-campus employment provided they are engaged in full-time study. F-1 students must present the following original documents for review by the Student Employment Program staff as a step in the employment authorization process: Visa, I-94, I-20 ID, and U.S.A. social security card.
- J-1 Student Visa holders are eligible for on-campus employment provided they are engaged in full-time study and present a work authorization letter from their sponsoring agency. J-1 students must also present the following original documents for review by the Student Employment Program staff as a step in the employment authorization process: Visa, I-94, IAP66, and U.S.A. social security card.
International students who have been admitted to the U.S.A. for study on other than an F-1 or J-1 Visa must contact the Student Employment Program staff for additional information.
Paperwork Deadlines
Due to the additional steps involved in authorizing foreign students to work at the University of Connecticut, all international students should allow a minimum of two weeks between when they complete and submit their required employment paperwork and when they hope to be permitted to begin working in an on-campus job.
