American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers 2010 Writing Competition

Description

The ACCFSL announces its 2010 Writing Competition.  Awards will be presented for (a) best book or book chapter, (b) best publishable article or substantial book review, (c) best student case note or comment, on a topic dealing with consumer financial services law.  

The awards include cash payments of $2500, $2000 and $1000, respectively, a Certification of Recognition from the College and travel expenses to attend the Spring 2010 meeting of the College in Denver, where the winners will be honored. 

Entries for an award may be published or unpublished, and must be submitted to the College before December 1, 2009.  Unpublished entries should be typed, double-spaced and in law review format.  Eight copies of the each entry should be submittd to:

Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition

Description

 

The Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition is open to any J.D. candidate student at an ABA accredited law school and is intended to foster knowledge and scholarly work by students on specific areas of the Law of the WTO. The competition is named for Professor Daniel T. Murphy who has been with the University of Richmond School of Law since 1976. As the cornerstone of international law at Richmond, the Richmond Journal of Global Law and Business chose to name this competition after him to honor the years of extraordinary work and dedication he has put forth to the students, the school, and our Journal.

 

All entries must pertain to timely legal issues concerning developed and/or developing countries and the WTO. Authors are expected to strongly include and analyze the topic material within their written work. Entries deemed to be lacking topical substance will not be considered.

1st place: $500.00 Cash award and publication in the Richmond Journal of Global Law and Business’s Annual Survey of the Law of the WTO

2nd place: $200.00 Cash award

3rd place: $100.00 Cash award

2009-2010 Louis Jackson National Student Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law

Description

This Competition, co-sponsored by Jackson Lewis LLP and the Institute for Law and the Workplace, seeks papers related to the law governing the workplace, such as employment law, labor law, employee benefits, or employment discrimination.  Authors must have completed or be currently taking course work in employment or labor law, and must be enrolled in an accredited law school during the Fall 2009 semester.  Only the first two submissions per law school will be accepted as entries for consideration.  One top honors award of $3,000 and two $1,000 awards will be presented to the top three entries.  In addition to the cash awards, the top three entries will be published on the Institute for Law and the Workplace website.  The deadline for submission is Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

Description

The Public Justice Foundation is sponsoring the 2010 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest.  The contest topic is "Can Coal be Clean?  Litigation Remedies for Coal Contamination from Mining to Combustion to Sequestration."  Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may submit a legal essay for the competition.  Essays can only be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school.  The Intent-to-enter submission deadline is January 29, 2010 and the essay contest deadline is March 31, 2010.  There is a $5,000 cash prize and the paper will be published in the Vermont Law School on-line Journal of Environmental Law.  Contest rules and the Intent-to-Enter Form may be obtained from Professor Mailly.  Questions about the contest may be directed to Cassandra Goings at 202-797-8600 or cgoings@publicjustice.net.  

Liberty Mutual Prize (for Papers on Property and Casualty Insurance)

Boston College Law School is holding its annual competition for the Liberty Mutual Prize, to be awarded for an exceptional article written during the 2009-2010 submission season on the law of property and casualty insurance, its regulation and corporate governance. The winning entrant will receive $5,000 and an offer of publication from the Boston College Law Review. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2010.

Big Y Scholarships

Big Y Scholarship applications are now available in the hall outside of the Student Finance Office, Starr Building, Room 116. There are over 300 scholarships totaling more than $250,000.

Big Y Scholarships are open to employees and their dependents; and customers and their dependents. To be eligible, a student's permanent residence or school must be located within the Western or Central Massachusetts, Norfolk County, MA or the state of Connecticut. (ALL employees are eligible regardless of residence.) Awards are given in the categories of High School Senior, Community College, Undergraduate, Graduate and Nontraditional Students (students not of traditional college age.) In addition, there are special scholarship series recognizing the contributions of area law enforcement officers and firefighters, as well as the tremendous sacrifices made by Military Servicemembers and their families.

2010 Bert W. Levit Essay Contest

The ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers' Professional Liability is sponsoring the 2010 Bert W. Levit Essay Contest.  The contest is held annually to generate interest and ideas among law students and young lawyers on topics in the area of lawyers' professional liability.  The winner of the contest will be awarded a prize of $5000 as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to attend the Committee's National Legal Malpractice Conference and receive the prize.  The contest is support by Long & Levit LLP.  

The essay contest is accepting entries now.  The deadline for submission is February 19, 2010.  The contest is open to law students and young lawyers who will have enrolled as members of the ABA no later than February 15, 2010.

College of Labor and Employment Lawyers Annual Writing Competition

Description

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2009-2010 College of Labor and Employment Lawyers Writing Competition for Law Students.  The scope of permissible topics is broad -- any aspect of domestic or private labor or employment law.  Students are encouraged to present a) a public policy issue, b) practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, c) a comment on a statute or the need for statutory modification, or d) a comment on a common law doctrine.  All currently enrolled undergraduate law students attending accredited law schools in the United States are eligible.  First prize is $1,500; second prize is $1,000; and third prize is $500.  In addition to a monetary award, the winner will have his/her article distributed to all Fellows with a future issue of the College newsletter and posted on the College's website.  The article may also be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law.  Winners will also be invited guests at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College. where they will be recognized and honored during the evening program.
