Federal Work-Study

Federal work study is a federally funded employment program for students with a demonstrated financial need as calculated from information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA.) If eligible, the student is awarded a dollar amount that can be earned during the indicated award period. The award is applied toward the student's budget and will decrease the student's eligibility for additional private educational loans for which the student may be applying.

Please note: If a student declines federal work study:

  • Reinstatement will be based on the availability of funding; and
  • The student may request additional loans for the amount of the award.

There is no difference between a work-study job and a student labor job other than the source of funding. Job responsibilities, pay rate, and method of payment are the same, regardless of funding source.

The types of jobs available on campus include:

  • administrative/clerical assistant/manuscript assistant
  • audio/video technical assistant
  • buildings & grounds assistant
  • computer/technical assistant
  • library assistant
  • program/project assistant
  • driver/transportation assistant
  • research assistant

ALL FIRST YEAR WORK STUDY RECIPIENTS WHO WORK ON CAMPUS WILL BE ASSIGNED JOBS IN THE LIBRARY and TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT, TO THE EXTENT THAT JOB OPENINGS EXIST.

STUDENTS WHO ARE STUDYING ABROAD, VISITING ANOTHER LAW SCHOOL, OR PARTICIPATING IN THE D.C. SEMESTER CANNOT EARN WORK STUDY WHILE PARTICIPATING IN THESE PROGRAMS. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

All on-campus job opportunities are posted in the Student Employment Program Office, on the main floor of the Library.

Upon finding an on-campus job, each potential student worker must complete a set of student payroll authorization forms. All required forms are available in the Student Employment Program Office, on the main floor of the Library. A student may not begin working before the completed payroll authorization paperwork is submitted to the Student Employment Office and approved by administrators at the Storrs campus. If a student is not on the payroll by October 7th of the award year, the work-study award will be automatically canceled.

There is a four to eight week period between the date the completed authorization packet is received by the Student Employment Program Office and receipt of the first paycheck. Students must submit biweekly time sheets reporting hours worked, in order to receive payment.

Students may use their Federal Work Study grant at an off-campus agency in the Connecticut, provided that the agency is non-profit, non-religious, and non-political. All off-campus contracts must meet final approval from the Student Employment Office in Storrs. Questions regarding off-campus work study contracts should be directed to Cynthia Garrison at (860) 486-3474. The initial paperwork necessary for off-campus appointments may be obtained in the Law School Student Employment Office.
