Jon Bauer

Jon Bauer, Clinical Professor of Law. A 1981 graduate of Cornell University, Professor Bauer received his law degree from the Yale Law School in 1984, and then was a staff attorney with the Legal Action Center, a public interest law firm in New York City, from 1984 through 1988. Professor Bauer has been teaching and supervising students in the law school's clinical programs since 1988. Since 2002, he has directed the Asylum and Human Rights Clinic, a clinical program in which law students represent refugees who have fled from persecution and are seeking asylum in the United States. Other courses taught have included Employment Discrimination Law, Wal-Mart (an inter-doctrinal and interdisciplinary course about the retail giant's impact and legal efforts to control it), Evidence, and clinics in the areas of poverty law and civil rights. He has served on the Boards of Directors of Connecticut Legal Services, the Connecticut Fair Housing Center, and the Connecticut Legal Rights Project.  Professor Bauer has frequently addressed bar groups and community and social service organizations, and testified before legislative committees, on issues relating to anti-discrimination law, refugees, legal ethics, and the provision of legal services to the poor. His writings include an article on clinical pedagogy (co-written with Professor James H. Stark) that has been included in the Clinical Legal Education Association's bibliography of basic readings for new clinical teachers, and a study of discrimination against people with disabilities in the bar admissions process, published in the UCLA Law Review.
