PILG Presents HELP Opportunity

UConn Law Wins Item:

  • When: April 1, 2009, 12:30 pm - 12:30 pm
  • Where: William F. Starr Hall Davis Courtroom

Everyone knows that the economy is on the rocks and that people everywhere are struggling with mortgages, food security and more.  One of the most severe symptoms of poverty is homelessness.  On April 1st at 12:30, come find out what YOU, with your unique skills as a law student, can do to help.

Federal Judge Zainey founded HELP (the Homeless Experience Legal Project) in New Orleans to help homeless people acquire much needed legal assistance for free.  The program set up a legal clinic in a local homeless shelter staffed by local firms and practitioners who share the work.  Activities include helping people apply for social security/disability benefits, maintaining certified copies of identification documents (since an individual will only be admitted into a homeless shelter with proper ID), and other legal issues.  The program has now moved to over 10 US cities and is in the process of being established in Hartford!

On April 1st, Judge Zainey, along with Federal Judge Cristaudo, the head administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration, will speak in Davis Courtroom at 12:30.  The program will give an overview of the Social Security Administration and application processes as well as address the HELP program in Hartford specifically and how people here can get involved.

Scrumptious food will be served.

Lambda Law Society's Spring Panel

The Changing Face of HIV/AIDS

When HIV/AIDS was first discovered in the 1980's, most of those diagnosed with the virus were only given a short time to live. While the prognosis has since changed, there continues to be tens of thousands of new infections reported each year.  Today, world-wise estimates indicate that there are at least 600 people newly infected with HIV every hour.  This panel will take a fresh look at the changing face of HIV/AIDS from four different perspectives.  In addition to examining the medical advances and current legal challenges by those with HIV/AIDS, there will also be a more localized focus on HIV/AIDS in Connecticut.

Food Reception to immediately follow the event

Commodification of Human Beings

On Friday, March 27, the Connecticut Journal of International Law will host its spring symposium, "The Commodification of Human Beings: Exploring the Reality, and the Future of Modern-Day Slavery."

  • When: March 27, 2009, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

The Connecticut Journal of International Law Spring Symposium 2009

Trafficking in persons is modern-day slavery involving victims who are forced, defrauded or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. Victims are snared into trafficking by physical force or false promises regarding job/educational opportunities or marriages in foreign countries. Human trafficking has a devastating impact on individual victims, who often suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against self and family, passport theft, and even death. But the impact of human trafficking goes beyond individual victims; it undermines the health, safety and security of all nations it touches. Because human trafficking is transnational in nature, partnerships between countries are critical to win the fight against modern-day slavery.

Human trafficking is a multi-dimensional threat that deprives people of their human rights and freedoms. This year's symposium will address three types of modern-day slavery: domestic servitude, child soldiers and debt bondage. In addition to a keynote speaker, there will be three panel discussions entitled: (1) Domestic Servitude: Hidden in Plain Sight; (2) Child Soldiers: Life on the Front Lines; and (3) Peonage/Forced Labor: 21st Century Bondage.
