Various organizations will provide information to students who want more information about the prevention of violence against women, about accessing services available to victims and abusers, and about becoming involved in violence prevention efforts. Sign your name or write messages of support on posters that will be hung in the library foyer. Representatives from Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services, Inc. (CONNSACS), and representatives from local service providers and shelters will be on hand to talk about the services they provide.

October 2009 is not only National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but also the 25-year anniversary of Thurman v. City of Torrington, 595 F. Supp. 1521 (D.Conn 1984), a case addressing the rights of domestic violence victims and the responsibilities of the criminal justice system in protecting victims. This panel discussion will examine current laws and practices in Connecticut and consider whether there is need for reform. Speakers invited include numerous individuals-an attorney, a judge, a police officer, a legislator, a counselor, a doctor- whose work relates to victims of domestic violence.

Speaker Jill Davies, director of the Building Comprehensive Solutions to Domestic Violence Initiative, and deputy director of Greater Hartford Legal Aid, will discuss the many ways that violence against women arises in the practice of law.
