Study Abroad Program

Introduction

Aware of it or not, virtually every lawyer now operates in a globalized environment. Modern legal education must train students to succeed in a rapidly-evolving transnational world.  Long before the term "globalization" became a household word, the Law School recognized the importance of preparing its graduates to "think globally". Since the program's inception, over two hundred fifty law students have participated in a growing number of exchanges with universities throughout the world. Studying abroad is an asset and adds to the quality of your legal education and experience. As one of your fellow students put it, “[i]t’s the opportunity of a lifetime. […]. You’ll learn. You’ll grow. Your eyes will be opened to things you’ve never considered.”

Overview of Study Abroad

We currently offer 12 study abroad programs in 8 countries, namely France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, and United Kingdom. Our sister schools offer a full spectrum of law courses that you are allowed to take.  Students may apply for admission to programs located at Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, Exeter, Haifa, Leiden, London, Mannheim, Nottingham, Siena, and Tilburg.

Before you apply

Eligibility

Day division students may apply in their first or second year to study abroad during their second or third year. Evening division students apply to study abroad after successfully completing their second year of study. It is possible to spend a full academic year abroad.

Credits awarded

You are expected to complete the equivalent of 12 UConn Law credits while studying abroad for one semester. At some sister schools you need to take an additional three-credit SRP with a UConn Law faculty member in order to receive 12 credits for the semester.

Grades at foreign institutions

The grades you earn at our sister schools are not listed on your UConn law transcript but will appear as pass/fail. Please note that your pass/fail options at Uconn law will not be affected by that.

Tuition, expenses, financial aid, and placement

You will receive a regular fee bill from the Business Office here, charging you for 12 credits. A Law School Study Abroad fee of $475 is charged to help defray the administrative expense of the program. Participation in most study abroad programs will have no effect on your eligibility for financial aid grants or loans. All costs related to travel, housing, books, and incidental expenses are your responsibility. The amount of these expenses depends on the location of the sister school and your personal lifestyle.

Housing

Some of our sister schools have on-campus housing available for you. Others do not but provide assistance in finding off-campus housing upon request.

Placement

Your job search and summer employment options may be affected by studying abroad. Please consult with Career Services for more information and alternative options.

Application procedure

Timeline

• Application deadline: Friday, February 1, 2013
• Interviews: During February and March
• Decisions made: Friday, March 8, 2013
• Student acceptances due: Monday, March 18, 2013

Selection criteria

Approval and selection for study abroad programs is based on your proposed study plan and consideration, among others, of academic or professional reasons stated for the particular study abroad program(s), evaluation of your recommenders, your current grade point average, and your facility with the language of the host country. Please note that many of our sister schools do not require you to speak a language other than English.
