- Question and Answer Session:
Aharon Barak, former president of the Supreme Court of Israel, will deliver the Martin-Flynn Lecture, Human Rights and the Battle against Terror, at the University of Connecticut School of Law on Tuesday, September 25 at 5:00 p.m. in the William R. Davis Courtroom, Starr Hall.
Justice Barak is a world-renowned advocate of an activist judiciary who served as president of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1995-2006. As president of the Supreme Court, Justice Barak helped to transform the Court into a forum for questions of momentous constitutional and social importance. Prior to his 1978 appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Barak was dean and member of the law faculty at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and served as attorney general of the State of Israel. He has written and spoken widely about the importance of preserving the rule of law in democratic societies during times of war and peace. His recent book, The Judge in a Democracy (Princeton University Press, 2006), sets out his vision of the judge's role in balancing the need to adapt the law to social change against the need for social order and stability. Justice Barak is currently a visiting professor of law and the Oscar M. Ruebhausen Distinguished Senior Fellow at Yale Law School.
Dean Jeremy Paul will introduce Justice Barak. The event is sponsored by the Martin-Flynn International Law Endowment Fund, held and managed by The University of Connecticut Law School Foundation, Inc. The fund was established in memory of John G. Martin and Daniel F. Flynn '62 to strengthen the international program of the Law School.
A wine and cheese reception will immediately follow the lecture. Please RSVP by Thursday, September 20 to Laurie Werling. All are welcome to attend.
