Remote Access to Research Databases
The electronic resources of the law school library are now available to students, faculty, and staff outside of the law school network via a proxy server. This means that students, faculty, and staff can access most information resources even when they are not connected to the campus network. Members of the law school community who use other Internet Service Providers (such as AOL), who are on leave at other institutions, who are home between terms, or who are traveling will be able to use the new proxy server to gain access to the same information resources they use when on campus.
Most publishers of electronic information resources who license these resources to the University of Connecticut require that the users connect to their resource from an IP address (the network address of a particular computer on the network) that is owned by the University. Some resources are even further restricted to just the Law School network. However, as members of the UConn Law community travel, work from locations not on the campus network, or leave the campus between terms, you were not able to access these licensed resources.
The proxy server prompts you for your law school network ID and password, confirming your affiliation with the university, and relays requests for resources to and from the publisher. And, best of all, this relaying is invisible to you.
What will the Remote Access look like?
If you are accessing the library's information resources from on campus, nothing will change for you.
From off campus, simply select a database from the list of library research databases (as you would if you were on campus). Your browser will be redirected to the Web Authentication Portal, where you will be prompted for your network ID and password. If this is entered correctly, you will be forwarded to the information resource. You will only need to log on the first time you access a resource; your browser will remember your authentication information until you close the browser.
Does the Remote Access service impact the LexisNexis and Westlaw services?
No. The Remote Access proxy is not required to use your LexisNexis and Westlaw account. If you have been issued an ID, you can access LexisNexis and Westlaw directly. However, access to LexisNexis' Academic Universe, Congressional Universe, and Statistical Universe from off campus requires use of the Remote Access proxy.
Are there any restrictions?
- Access to off campus use is ID-based, and is generally restricted to currently enrolled UConn Law students and currently employed UConn Law faculty and staff.
- Holders of research affiliate, or guest, library ID cards are contractually excluded from remote access to most online periodical indexes and databases.
Please note: sharing your ID and password with someone who is not a member of the Law School community for the purpose of allowing another to use the licensed databases is a violation of the Network Policies and Guidelines.
What if I have questions?
Questions regarding the selection or use of a particular database should be directed to the library reference desk (570-5068). Questions regarding problems with remote access should be directed to the Information Systems helpdesk (570-5158).
