Procedure for configuring (student) laptop to access the Law School Network

Most of the directions below apply to Windows 95 and 98. Macintosh instructions are available at the bottom of the document.

Laptop Minimum requirements:

  • See the Minimum Configuration for Laptop & PC page
  • You will also need a "Category 5 Ethernet Cable" to attach your computer to the data jack. This item is available at CompUSA and most computer stores. Any length you are comfortable with will suffice, but keep in mind that the cable needs to run the distance from the data jack you are plugging into to your laptop.
  • Ensure that your laptop computer is 100% functional.
  • You might need your Windows CD-ROM; alternatively, you should know where your vendor has placed the 'cab' files for adding or removing features and functionality. If you do not have your original CD, and do not know where the 'cab' files have been stored, please contact your vendor before proceeding.

Prepare for load and configuration of networking components

  • Run Scandisk to make sure your hard drive file system is free of errors. (Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scandisk). We also recommend that your defragment your hard drive before continuing.
  • Turn off or disable all running programs, (especially any anti-virus programs!).

Install the Ethernet card

  • Follow the instructions that came with your LAN adapter PCMCIA card to install it into your computer.
  • Right click on "My Computer", select the "Device Manager" tab. Make sure that your new PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter is listed under the "Network Adapters" group listing and does not have a yellow and red exclamation point after it.
  • If you have the yellow and red exclamation point, it means that your card is not working right and you should refer to the instructions that came with your card. There should be a section entitled "Troubleshooting".
  • Once your card is installed and ready, you may proceed

Add and configure the proper "Clients" and "Protocols"

  • You will need the "Client for Microsoft Networks" loaded and configured in order to connect to the e-mail server.
  • You will need the "Client for NetWare" loaded and configured in order to connect to the student server Marshall, and to print to the lab printers.
  • If you only want to get to the internet, just install and configure the TCP/IP protocol.

Please follow these directions carefully, for you can really mess up your computer if you don't load the "Novell IntranetWare Client" exactly as outlined below.

All of the following steps take place in the "Network" component listing. You can get there by performing the following:

  1. Right click on Network Neighborhood
  2. Select "Properties"

Add TCP/IP Protocol

  1. Right click on the Network Neighborhood, select "Properties"
  2. On the "Configuration" section, point and click on the "Add" button
  3. Point and double click Protocol
  4. On left side of window point and click on Microsoft
  5. Point and double click TCPIP

Configure the TCP/IP Protocol

  1. When the configuration window appears again, Point and double click TCPIP
  2. Ensure that Obtain an IP address automatically is selected
  3. Click on the WINS Configuration tab
  4. Ensure "Use DHCP for WINS resolution" is selected
  5. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing
  6. Click OK

Verify Connectivity

Reboot the computer when you are prompted to do so. At this point you should be able to connect to "the Internet". Try using Netscape or Internet Explorer to get to an Internet site. If you cannot, please check the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol. If you get any error messages, please make a note of the exact text and send a brief description of the problem, the text of the message and a way we can contact you to the Help Desk. Someone will get back to you with a resolution.

You may want to try adding the following settings in the TCP/IP configuration - but we prefer that you not do this unless absolutely necessary.

  1. Point and click on the "DNS Configuration" tab, Ensure "Enable DNS" is selected
  2. Enter your user profile in the "Host" field and "law.uconn.edu" in the Domain field. In the "DNS Server Search Order" box type in the following entries:
  3. 137.99.25.14, then click "Add"
  4. 137.99.15.64, then click "Add"
  5. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing
  6. Click ok. Reboot and check for connectivity.

In order to get access to the applications offered in the lab, your file space on the "Marshall" server and print to the lab printers (directions on how to set this up will be coming soon) you will need to setup the rest of these components. Please make sure the TCP/IP component is working before you move on.

Once again, all of the following steps take place in the "Network" component listing. You can get there by performing the following:

  1. Right click on Network Neighborhood
  2. Select "Properties"

Add "Client for Microsoft Networks"

If "Client for Microsoft Networks" is not listed under the network components listing, perform the following steps:

  1. Point and Click ADD
  2. Point and double click "Clients"
  3. On the left side of the window, point and click on "Microsoft"
  4. On the right side of the window, point and click on "Client for Microsoft Networks"
  5. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing

Configure "Client for Microsoft Networks"

  1. Select "Client for Microsoft Networks" then click on the "Properties" button
  2. Click in the box next to "Log on to Windows NT domain". Make sure there is a checkmark in the box. If there isn't click once in the box to put a check mark in it.
  3. Type the following in the "Windows NT domain" box: UCONNLAW
  4. Make sure there is a dot in the circle next to "Quick Logon". If there isn't, click once in the circle to put a dot in it.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Point and click on " Identification " tab
  7. Insert the following information to identify your computer on the network:
  8. Computer Name: Your Login name
  9. Workgroup: UCONNLAW
  10. Computer Description: Laptop
  11. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing

Add "Client for NetWare"

  1. Select "add"
  2. Select "Client"
  3. Select "Microsoft" on the left-hand side and click on "Client for NetWare" on the right hand side. (That's not a typo. You first want to install the Microsoft version of the NetWare client. Once you get on the Novell server {Marshall} you will have access to the Novell client for Netware.)
  4. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing

Configure "Client for NetWare"

  1. Once the "Client for NetWare" is installed, select it and click on "Properties"
  2. In the field "Preferred server" enter Marshall
  3. In the "First network drive" make sure F is showing
  4. Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to "Enable logon script processing". If there is not, click once in the box.
  5. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing
  6. In the field labeled "Primary Network Logon" make sure "Client for NetWare" is listed.

Remove "NetBEUI" - If it is listed

  1. If "NetBEUI" is listed in the Network Configuration listing - click on it once to select it, then click the "remove" button to get rid of it.
  2. Click "OK" until you get back to the "Network" component listing

Finish up initial configuration

  1. Click "ok"
  2. Your computer should be "copying files" for a while. It should then prompt you to reboot.
  3. Click Yes.

Login to the network

  1. Login to the network: (if you are not prompted for a network login, please revisit the section "Add and configure the proper clients" above.)
  2. "Enter network password" screen will appear.
  3. Enter the following -
  4. User name: Your Student name (first letter of your first name and first seven letters of your last name.
  5. Password: Your individual password given by Computer Services.
  6. "Login Server": MARSHALL
  7. If you were not prompted for a "Login Server", right click on "Network Neighborhood", Select "Properties" and make sure that the "Primary Login" is "Client for NetWare". If the "Client for NetWare" does not appear, please revisit the section "Add and configure the proper clients" above (specifically the sections entitled " Add 'Client for NetWare'" and "Configure 'Client for Netware")

Windows Password

  1. The next entry may request to Set Windows Password
  2. New Password: delete entry
  3. Confirm new password: Ensure this is blank
  4. (This will ensure that you will not require a password for your Windows 95 workstation. The "Windows Password" does NOT secure your computer. It is an annoyance more than anything else.)
  5. Point and Click OK to submit your blank password.

Finish it up!

You have now installed your PCMCIA card and configured it to log into the Law School Student and Mail servers.

Instructions for Macintosh and MacOS

  1. From the Apple menu, select "Control Panels" then "TCP/IP"
  2. In the Setup area, next to "Configure" make sure that "Using DHCP Server" is selected.
  3. Leave "DHCP Client ID" blank
  4. If there is a text entry field next to "Name server addr" leave it blank.
  5. Under "Search Domains", put "law.uconn.edu"<return>"uconn.edu"
If you are connecting to the Internet through different ways (e.g., using another ISP through a dialup connection, DSL/Cable modem, or another network), be sure to verify the settings for the UConn Law "configuration". For more information about setting up different configurations for different networks, click on the question mark next to the "Info" button and read the "Working with network software configurations" topic.
