Martha Stone is the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Children’s Advocacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to the legal rights of poor children based at the University of Connecticut School of Law. She is an adjunct professor and teaches an internship course in Child Advocacy as well as an interdisciplinary course entitled Law and Medicine in Child Protection. She received her B.A. from Wheaton College and her J.D. and L.L.M. from Georgetown University Law Center. She served as Associate Director of Children’s Rights, Inc., a national organization engaged in foster care litigation around the country, and for 18 years previous to that, she was Legal Director of the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union. She is responsible for bringing the class action lawsuits resulting in Consent Decrees involving the Department of Children and Families, and the juvenile detention centers. She is the recent recipient of the “Phoebe Bennett” Award from the Ct. Association of Mental Health Clinics; the “Public Citizen of the Year” Award from the Ct. Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers; and the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Ct. Association of School Superintendents.
