Professor Long grew up in Hartford's West End and graduated from the Hartford Public Schools. He went on to Harvard College, where he concentrated in Irish folklore, and to the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He then served as a law clerk in Fargo, N.D. for Judge Myron H. Bright of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for Judge Albert M. Rosenblatt of the New York Court of Appeals.
As a law student, he led a seminar on state constitutional law and has continued an active research interest in the area. Before coming to the University of Connecticut, Professor Long was an Assistant Solicitor General in the New York Office of the Attorney General, where he regularly appeared in state and federal appellate courts. His publications include Intermittent State Constitutionalism, 34 Pepperdine L. Rev. 41 (2006).
