Insurance & Intellectual Property Innovation

Organized by the Insurance Law Center and the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic at the University of Connecticut, and the Geneva Association

This conference will explore the relationship between insurance, intellectual property and innovation. Can intellectual property promote innovation in the insurance industry? Can insurance for intellectual property promote innovation in other industries? The conference will bring together leading scholars in the fields of intellectual property and insurance with leaders in law and the insurance business. All sessions will begin by introducing fundamental intellectual property and insurance concepts to foster communication across the specialties of insurance, law, and intellectual property.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • The market for intellectual property insurance and prospects for growth in the U.S. and Europe;
  • The latest research on the role of insurance in markets for intellectual property;
  • The role of government in facilitating markets in intellectual property and insurance;
  • The experience of the U.S. documentary film industry with copyright infringement, fair use, and media liability insurance;
  • The history and prospects of patents for business methods;
  • The pros and cons of business methods patents as compared to alternative methods to foster and protect business innovation;
  • The experience of the U.S. insurance industry with business methods patents.
