UConn Law Hosts Annual Diversity Week
HARTFORD – The UConn Law Student Bar Association Diversity Committee, in conjunction with Shipman & Goodwin LLP, proudly presents Diversity Week 2013 from March 18-22 (www.law.uconn.edu/diversity-week).
This annual celebration highlights the importance of diversity initiatives at UConn Law and in the Connecticut legal community. The spectrum of events explores diversity of ethnicity, gender, politics, disability status, religion, and more.
Event highlights include:
• A student luncheon and discussion lead by the Honorable Lubbie Harper, Jr., a 1975 graduate of UConn Law and a judge trial referee of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Harper will lead a discussion on the importance of diversity in the legal community.
• Guest lecturer Diana Lombardi will lead a talk on transgender rights and awareness, gender identity and gender expression.
• Professors from a number of law schools, a legal blogger on same sex marriage issues, and the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union will conduct a panel on the Defense of Marriage Act, “Unequal Under the Law.”
• Representatives of the Affinity Bar Associations of Connecticut will participate in a panel discussion on their experiences about finding the right balance between fitting in to the legal community while allowing themselves to stand out and celebrate their differences.
• Valarie Kaur, critically acclaimed lawyer, civil rights advocate and filmmaker of “Divided We Fall,” will screen her film and lead a discussion about racism post 9/11. Kaur is the founding director of the Yale Visual Law Project.

On May 20, the Law School's Insurance Law Center will present a symposium on Lawyers Professional Liability. The event is being presented in cooperation with the Hartford Chapter of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society.

On May 17, Professor Richard Pomp will be a presenter at the 10th Annual New Mexico Tax Policy Conference in Albuquerque.

On May 15, Professor Darcy Kirk will be the luncheon speaker at the annual meeting of the New Jersey Law Librarians Association where she will update the group on the activities of the Association of American Law Libraries (AALL). Kirk currently serves as president of the AALL.

Professor Richard A. Wilson will deliver three talks in Oslo, Norway on May 14 and 15 including "Gangster's Paradise? Framing Crime in Sub-Saharan Africa" at the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo.
