
A new survey of federal judges on sentencing practices and the federal sentencing guidelines was released last week by the United States Sentencing Commission. Among the findings are the following:

67% believe that the federal sentencing guidelines have increased fairness in meeting the purposes of sentencing

70% believe that the guideline ranges are too high for the offenses of trafficking in crack cocaine and possession of child pornography

79% believe that the interests of crime victims generally are adequately protected under current federal sentencing procedures
