Serving Connecticut

Profile: Class of 2006

As a staff attorney at Greater Hartford Legal Aid (GHLA), Cecil Thomas ’06 is used to working long hours on behalf of his clients, many of whom face eviction and  homelessness for the non-payment of rent and a range of other landlord-tenant issues.

"It’s hard to take time off when you do this kind of work,” says  Thomas, who started at GHLA — a not-for-profit law firm that provides clients living in poverty with free representation for civil legal issues — in September 2006. “Typically, I am working on 40-50 open housing cases in various stages.”

Hard work is nothing new to Thomas. During his four years at Brandeis University, he earned both a B.A. (with honors in American History and Political Science) and M.A., served as chief justice of the Brandeis student government, and worked up to 20 hours a week trouble-shooting faculty and student computer problems. Somehow, Thomas also managed to work two days a week at an area law firm and three nights a week as a unit coordinator at Mt. Auburn Hospital. “I have always liked working multiple jobs,” he says.
