PILG Presents HELP Opportunity

Everyone knows that the economy is on the rocks and that people everywhere are struggling with mortgages, food security and more. One of the most severe symptoms of poverty is homelessness. On April 1st at 12:30, come find out what YOU, with your unique skills as a law student, can do to help.
Federal Judge Zainey founded HELP (the Homeless Experience Legal Project) in New Orleans to help homeless people acquire much needed legal assistance for free. The program set up a legal clinic in a local homeless shelter staffed by local firms and practitioners who share the work. Activities include helping people apply for social security/disability benefits, maintaining certified copies of identification documents (since an individual will only be admitted into a homeless shelter with proper ID), and other legal issues. The program has now moved to over 10 US cities and is in the process of being established in Hartford!
On April 1st, Judge Zainey, along with Federal Judge Cristaudo, the head administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration, will speak in Davis Courtroom at 12:30. The program will give an overview of the Social Security Administration and application processes as well as address the HELP program in Hartford specifically and how people here can get involved.
