I've heard that students need health insurance, what is this about?

Please review the brochure for the current University sponsored health insurance plan. The University automatically enrolls students in the University health plan, however, if you have alternative coverage you can waive the university plan. If you fail to complete the waiver, it will be assumed that you accept coverage offered under the University sponsored health insurance plan, and the charge for that coverage will remain on your fee bill.

How do I waive the health insurance fee that is on my bill?

Log on to your account, and from the HOME page, navigate to:

 

Menu> Self Service > Student Center > Finances > Student Permissions > Health Insurance Waiver.

Can I bring a car to campus?

Yes, but you may need to register your vehicle for parking. Parking registration decals will be in your summer orientation information or available for pickup in September at the Law School Bursar/Business Office, Chase Hall room 202.

I don't have a car, but there is a vehicle registration fee on my bill, can that charge be removed?

Certainly! Please go to the parking registration form, fill in the required information and select "I will not park on campus & would like to cancel the fee."

Can my financial aid be used to cover anything other than tuition?

University charges, other than tuition and fees, cannot be paid automatically by Federal Title IV funds and/or outside scholarships without your express authorizations. This includes charges such as parking, laser printing or balances from previous semesters. Without a waiver, you must pay these charges even if a refund check is received. If those charges remain unpaid, a Bursar Hold may be placed on your account, restricting registration, and other services. To avoid this inconvenience, waivers are available. These waivers authorized the Bursar's Office to use Federal Title IV funds and/or outside scholarships to pay any and all charges that may appear on your fee bill. If I was admitted as an out of state student does that mean I am considered out of state for all the years I am in law school?

All out of state students can apply for in state residency after living in CT for one year. There are will be a mandatory meeting in early September, for all students who wish to apply to become CT residents for their second year of study. The process will be explained at that meeting and applications will be handed out.

How can I change my address with the law school?

During the summer, please contact the Registrar's Office via email or submit a change of address form.

For purposes of (car insurance, health club membership, student loan deferral, etc), I need to show I am a student. How do I do that?

The Registrar's Office must wait until the first day of classes to process your request, but as of that date we are happy to complete any forms that you may have, or we have a enrollment verification letter that we can send out for you. If you are giving us a form to complete, we ask that you allow us to fill in the dates of attendance for you.

I have my schedule of classes and would like to add/drop a few, may I? How do I do that?

We're sorry, we do not permit 1L JD students to adjust their schedules. The course schedule has been designed so that a student remains with their section for all of their courses. LL.M., Visiting and Exchange students may adjust their schedules through the second week of classes, this may be done via the Student Admin system or by contacting the Registrar's Office for assistance. Transfer students may adjust their schedules through the first week of classes. This may also be done via the Student Admin system or by contacting the Registrar's Office for assistance.

Will I have an academic advisor? How do I contact him/her?

All students are encouraged to seek the advice and counsel of any faculty member for questions concerning their course of study. You are however, assigned a particular faculty member who will be given your name as an advisee. All 1L JD students are assigned a faculty advisor that they will meet during the first week of classes. Transfer students are directed to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for academic counseling. LL.M. students are directed to the LL.M. program director. Exchange students are directed to the International Programs office. The Registrar's Office is also a good place to start for any advisement question as well.

When can I meet with a career services counselor?

The University of Connecticut School of Law is a member school in the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), and abides by the Association's principles and standards, and accompanying guidelines. According to NALP Principles and Standards, Pt. V, D, law schools "should not offer placement services to first-year law students prior to November 1." This guideline is intended to insure that in your first few weeks at law school, you focus on your studies and adjusting to law school life. After November 1st, our office will be holding orientation sessions for all 1Ls, resume workshops, and additional programs targeting 1Ls. In addition, you will be able to schedule an individual counseling appointment with one of our attorney counselors at that time.

We encourage you to use your summer before law school to relax so that you can enter your 1L first semester well-rested. If you have time, you can look over your resume and modify it with an eye toward highlighting your skill set that could be transferable to legal employers (i.e. writing, public speaking, analysis, critical thinking). You may also want to add in the University of Connecticut School of Law to your education section. Networking with lawyers who are friends or family may also be a source of good advice. Think about joining local bar associations, which have reduced or no cost fees for students, as another great tool for networking.

When are final exams?

Exams are scheduled for the following dates for the Fall Semester for 1L Day Division students: December 11, 13, 17, and 19, 2007 Exams are scheduled for the following dates for the Fall Semester for 1L Evening Division students: December 13 and 18, 2007. All other students, for whom the course of study consists of electives, have a varied exam schedule. The course offerings page lists all courses offered as well as the exam date for that course. Please remember: in situations of poor weather or other unavoidable situation, students must be available for examinations December 10-21, 2007.
