Biography
Roland Krause is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law. He received his law degree in 2003 from Freie Universität Berlin. After his Ph.D. research in Athens, Greece, he joined Freie Universität Berlin where he teaches International Private Law and Comparative Law. He is admitted to practice as both a German Rechtsanwalt and Spanish Abogado, giving him full rights of audience in the higher courts both in Germany and Spain. He is also one of a limited number of lawyers with the requisite experience to obtain the German title of Fachanwalt für Erbrecht (Specialist in estate planning and succession law).
Professor Krause writes on international family law and estate planning issues as well as notary law, international procedure law including data protection policies. Much of his work involves an international element. Regularly attending and speaking at international conferences, Krause has built up a wide network of international contacts to assist in this area. He has served from time to time as an officer of several organizations for the promotion of international law including the family law committee of the International Bar Association (London 2012-2014) as well as the Young Lawyers committee of the Bar Association of Barcelona. He is a member of the German-Spanish Lawyers Association, the Juristische Gesellschaft zu Berlin and the German-Brazilian Law Society.
As a researcher, Professor Krause has directed studies funded by the German Academic Exchange Council (DAAD) with regard to international family business issues and the European Union concerning data privacy and medical law, focusing on electronic health records in a cross-border context. He is a member of the editorial board of the German Law Review on Islamic Law and external reviewer for the Revista La Notaría in Spain. These projects have resulted in invitations to present at conferences in the United States, Mexico, Europe, China and Dubai. Additionally, his work can be found in numerous book chapters as well as articles being published in law journals as well as inter-disciplinary peer reviewed publications. His views have also been sought on national television and radio in Barcelona and Berlin.
He has developed an interest in Sports and the Law and Arbitration, serving as an arbitrator-judge on a federal arbitration court for sports by the German Diving association under the rules of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, holding a divemasters diving instructors license.
He has taught at Freie Universität Berlin since 2005, visiting at ESADE LAW SCHOOL (2007-2009), Center for Transnational Legal Studies at Georgetown Law School and at Uni Bocconi Law School, Milan. In the Spring 2013, Krause will be teaching at the Universidad de Málaga LL.M programme in International Family law and Succession law.
