Disability Services
The University of Connecticut School of Law strives to assure that students with disabilities have access to the full range of programs and services it offers. Disability Support Services (DSS) at the Law School works with students in the development and implementation of appropriate accommodations to allow access to physical facilities and to educational and extracurricular programs. Jane Thierfeld Brown will assist with reasonable accommodations. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., and evening hours by appointment.
Pre-Enrollment assistance
Students with disabilities considering applying or admitted to the Law School are invited to tour the campus. If assistance is required, please contact the Admissions Office or DSS. Students with other disabilities may contact DSS for discussion of accommodations.
Identification
It is the responsibility of students to identify him/herself to DSS and to request accommodations, if they are necessary. Appropriate documentation is required before an individualized assessment and provisions of accommodations may occur. Please contact the DSS for information on documentation.
Academic accommodations
The following are examples of academic accommodations that the Law School can provide. This list is not exhaustive, as we perform an individualized assessment of students' disability-related needs:
- Scheduling classes in accessible locations;
- Administering examinations under special conditions;
- Auxiliary services such as note takers and sign language interpreters;
- Faculty/library staff orientation about a disability
- Information and referrals
Requests for accommodations should be made annually, two weeks before the school year begins. Students who require interpreters or alternate format text must request as soon as possible as these services can take longer to secure.
Housing
The Law School does not provide student housing. The School maintains a list of apartments, rooms, and houses available for rent. This list includes information on accessibility.
Special assistance
DSS maintains information regarding counseling and treatment centers for students with substance abuse or emotional/psychiatric disabilities. The information can be mailed upon request.
Students who elect to participate in the University of Connecticut Health Center Student Health Plan have access to mental health services at the Health Center. No referral or pre-authorization is required.
Physical accessibility
Accessible entrances
Upon request, DSS will provide a touch pad to open doors at the following ramped entrances:
- Law Library: at main entrance
- Hosmer Hall: in the corner of the "L";
- Chase Hall: on the west side of the building;
- Knight Hall: on the south side of the building;
- Starr Building: on the west side of the building.
Accessible lavatories
- Law Library: on all levels;
- Hosmer Hall: on the first and second floors in the south wing near Rooms 130 and 230;
- Chase Hall: on the first floor near accessible entrance;
- Knight Hall: on the first floor near the accessible entrance;
- Starr Building; near the elevator on the first floor.
Designated parking
- Law Library, Chase and Knight Hall; in the driveway directly in front of Chase Hall;
- Hosmer Hall; near the Cafeteria door;
- Starr Building: in the north section of the parking lot behind the building.
