The American Constitution Society and several other legal groups have put together The Path to the Federal Bench, a recent publication aimed at law students and lawyers early in their careers who are interested in pursuing an Article III federal judgeship some time in the future.
The pamphlet includes information on various aspects of the process, including:
-
how to assess one’s candidacy
-
the nomination process, including seeking a nomination; what happens after you submit your application; the vetting process; and tips to bear in mind before the nomination process.
-
the confirmation process, including the questionnaire for judicial nominees; the "blue slip" process; and what to expect at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
- The purpose of the pamphlet is to alert potential candidates to the intricacies of the process and its potential pitfalls, and to offer some advice for a successful candidacy.
