Living in Hartford
The Law School is located in Hartford's historic West End, a neighborhood that is rich in community spirit, architecture, natural beauty and unique dining and entertainment options. The West End is what one might call a "Front Porch" community; neighbors stop on the street to say hello, residents participate in community groups and law students are welcomed with warmth and respect. The Law School's lovely campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as are many homes and apartment buildings in the area. Farmington Avenue, which is just a short walk from the campus, houses over a dozen restaurants and bars, a bowling alley, historic museums, and a number of independently-owned shops.
From the campus, it is an easy ten-minute drive or bus ride to downtown Hartford, where the Connecticut Supreme Court and Appellate Courts, the State Capitol, virtually all state and federal agencies and numerous major law firms and multinational corporations are located. The Law School has close ties to legal, corporate and public institutions, and students may take advantage of an especially wide variety of employment opportunities, externships, clinical legal practices and volunteer experiences.
Hartford is an increasingly thriving cultural center. Real Art Ways, an alternative multidisciplinary arts organization, hosts contemporary art exhibitions, movies, concerts, readings, performances and monthly "Creative Cocktail" events. The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts presents major Broadway shows, symphony orchestras, films, and jazz, blues and cabaret performances. The Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the United States, has extraordinary collections and shows. The Hartford Civic Center and the New England Dodge Music Center offer sporting events and concerts. Additionally, there are many interesting businesses in Hartford's diverse neighborhoods, which are easily accessible by car, bike or bus.
Hartford's location in New England is terrific. In less than an hour's drive, one will find excellent hiking trails, ocean views, organic farms, skiiing and snowboarding, and quaint town villages. Students can drive from the Hartford area to Boston or New York City in about two hours. Additionally, numerous national and international flights are available at Bradley Airport, which is just 25 minutes from campus.
