TRANSFER STUDENT FAQ

Does the University of Connecticut School of Law accept transfer students? Yes. At the completion of their first year of law school, transfer applicants can apply to either our day or evening division. While we do not accept transfer students beyond the first year of law school, a student may apply as a visiting student for up to one year of study during the student's second or third year of law school.

How many credits are required to apply as a transfer candidate? A candidate must have completed one full year of law school but cannot have earned more than 32 credits.

What is the deadline for transfer admission for the Fall of 2013? Applications should be submitted beginning May 1, 2013.  The application filing deadline is July 1, 2013.

Do you offer application fee waivers? The Law School does offer application fee waivers for transfer students. Please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@law.uconn.edu for additional information.

I have previously applied to the Law School's J.D. Program. May I use my previously submitted application materials to support my transfer application? No. Even if you have previously applied you must submit a new application along with current required supporting documentation.

Do you require my LSAT score to be reported from CAS? Yes, the Law School will request a report from CAS with your LSAT score and undergraduate transcript upon processing your transfer application. Please contact LSAC for additional information.

Do you require a Letter of Good Standing from my current law school? Yes. The letter of good standing should be sent to the Admissions Office after the completion of the spring semester.

Do you require class rank in addition to the transcript? Yes. We require both class rank and an official transcript. The transcript must include fall and spring term grades; and the class rank must be calculated after spring grades are released. 

Do you require certification from my undergraduate institution? Yes. Admitted applicants are required to submit our College Certification to their undergraduate institution. In turn your college or university should complete the form and return it to the Admissions Office.

How many recommendations do I need to submit? Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation from your law school professors.

When can I expect to receive a decision on my application? The Committee begins reviewing files as soon as they are complete.

Are transfer students eligible for scholarships? Typically transfer students are ineligible for scholarships. If however, scholarship funds become available, transfer students will be considered.

Are transfer students eligible for financial aid? Although much of our need based aid is encumbered, transfer students will be considered for any available need based funds. For more information about financial aid please visit the website.

Are transfer students eligible for the Inter-Journal Write-On competition?  Yes, transfer students may compete in the Inter-Journal Write-On Competition. The Competition will take place between mid June and early July, 2013. For more information please see the attachment below. Transfer students admitted after the Inter-Journal Write-On Competition have an opportunity to participate in alternative write-on competition for our Public Interest Law Journal.

Are transfer students eligible to participate on the Moot Court Board? Yes, transfer students may compete for an invitation to join the Connecticut Moot Court Board in both the fall and spring semesters of their 2L year.  There is no particular process geared toward transfer students. 

Are transfer students at any disadvantage when it comes to registering for courses? Although you may not receive your first choice course, the Registrar will work with you to piece together a schedule of courses. For more information please visit the Course Enrollment web page.

Are transfer students able to participate in externships (for credit) in the fall 2013 semester? Transfers are eligible to participate in an individual externship. Please visit the externship web site for additional information.

Are transfer students able to participate in OCI? Yes, transfer students will have full access to programs and services offered by the Career Planning Center (CPC). Once you decide to attend the Law School, you will receive a letter from the CPC regarding the next step.

Can I speak with a current student who transferred to UConn Law? Currently, there are close to 30 UConn Law students who transferred from another law school. If you are interested in connecting with a UConn Law student who transferred from your current law school, please contact Karen DeMeola.
