Scholarships

All applicants admitted to the Law School are considered for merit-based scholarships, including (i) Dean's Scholarships and (ii) Named Scholarships from the Law School Foundation. There is no separate application required for Named Scholarships--however, if you believe you meet the criteria for a Named Scholarship, the committee will accept a statement regarding your qualifications.

In addition to merit scholarships, the Law School also awards need-based scholarships and grants. Tuition remission and opportunity grant money is awarded by the Student Finance Office. Regardless of whether or not an admissions decision has been rendered, students must apply for need-based aid and meet all financial aid deadlines.

• Dean's Scholarships are awarded annually by the dean of the Law School to a small number of incoming first-year students who have shown exceptional promise. Dean's Scholarships range from partial to full tuition and are not renewable.

  • Aetna International LL.M. Scholarship
    This tuition scholarship is for a student who is enrolling or enrolled at the University of Connecticut School of Law and, specifically its international LL.M. program in insurance law. The scholarship is to be awarded with a preference for a student entering the program from China.
  • Thomas L. Archibald Scholarship
    Dorothy Clark Archibald endowed this scholarship in memory of her husband, a long-time faculty member and friend of the Law School, to provide a scholarship for an exceptional student who otherwise might not attend the Law School.
  • Donald R. Ballman '98 Information Law Scholarship
    Donald R. Ballman '98 endowed this scholarship to be awarded annually to one or more entering students who intend to pursue a career in information law, which includes intellectual property law, media and entertainment law and technology law. Preference is given to an evening division student.
  • Judge Jerrold H. Barnett '54 Scholarship
    Family members, colleagues, and friends endowed the Judge Jerrold H. Barnett '54 Scholarship in memory of the judge who had served as an adjunct faculty member and student supervisor of the appellate division of the criminal clinic program. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has participated in the Criminal Clinic.
  • Bessye W. Bennett '73 Memorial Scholarship
    Dr. John Bennett, the Knox Foundation, family, colleagues and friends endowed the Bessye W. Bennet '73 Memorial Scholarship to honor her lifetime achievements and broad vision of social responsibility. Bessye W. Bennett '73 was a practicing attorney and businesswoman, served as president of the Knox Foundation in Hartford, and was involved in numerous civic and community organizations. The scholarship is awarded to a first year student with financial need who wishes to make a difference.
  • Bingham McCutchen LLP Scholarship
    Bingham McCutchen LLP established this scholarship for a first year student who has overcome significant economic, linguistic, cultural or educational obstacles or who belongs to a group historically underrepresented in law schools and the legal profession, who has presented a record of leadership in diversity issues or particular promise of substantial and distinctive multicultural contributions to the Law School and the legal profession, and expressed the preference to live and work in private law practice in Connecticut.
  • Hyman Blumberg Prize Scholarship
    Created by Dean and Professor of Law and Business, Emeritus, Phillip I. Blumberg to honor the memory of his father, Hyman Blumberg, this endowed scholarship is awarded to an incoming student who has participated in the American labor movement either as a trade union staff person or member or whose parent has so participated, and who has expressed an interest in assisting the labor movement upon admission to the bar. Or, this scholarship may be presented to an incoming first year student whose academic record gives promise of high scholarly achievement at the School of Law.
  • Phillip I. Blumberg Scholarship
    Gaetano Ferro '78 endowed this scholarship in 2006 in honor of Dean and Professor of Law and Business, Emeritus, Phillip I. Blumberg to support one or more scholarships for first year students whose academic record gives promise of high scholarly achievement at the Law School, with a preference given to a student from a Connecticut urban high school.
  • The Honorable M. Joseph Blumenfeld Memorial Scholarship
    Friends and colleagues endowed this scholarship in tribute to The Honorable M. Joseph Blumenfeld of the U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut, to provide financial support for a deserving student.
  • Boehringer Ingelheim Scholarship
    Boehringer Ingelheim established this scholarship to be awarded to a student who intends to pursue a career in Intellectual Property. In awarding this scholarship, preference will be given to students who have overcome significant economic, linguistic, cultural or educational obstacles or who belong to a group historically underrepresented in law schools and in the legal profession.

    Francisco L. Borges '78 endowed this scholarship to support to an outstanding student enrolled at the Law School.
  • John C. Brittain Scholarship
    John C. Brittain was the first African-American tenured professor at the Law School. Upon the occasion of his leaving the Law School to become dean elsewhere, friends and colleagues endowed the John C. Brittain Scholarship to honor his years of service to the School, the Greater Hartford community, and the State of Connecticut. This fund provides financial assistance to a first year student who has demonstrated scholastic achievement, has financial need and with a preference for a student who has overcome obstacles to success.
  • Adolph Bysiewicz Law Librarian Scholarship
    Shirley Raissi Bysiewicz '54 was the first tenured female law professor at the Law School as well as the law librarian for more than twenty years. Upon the occasion of the death of her brother-in-law, Adolph Bysiewicz, she endowed a scholarship in his name for a student who is a dual degree candidate in library science and law.
  • Shirley Raissi Bysiewicz '54 Law Librarian Scholarship
    Shirley Raissi Bysiewicz '54 was the first tenured female professor at the Law School as well as the law librarian for more than twenty years. When she died, her bequest as well as an outpouring of donations from alumni/ae, family members, friends, and colleagues endowed a scholarship in her name, intended for a student who is a dual degree candidate in library science and law.
  • CATIC Foundation Scholarship
    This scholarship was endowed by the Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company Foundation (CATIC), and is intended for a deserving student with financial need who has completed at least one full academic year of studies at the Law School, with preference given to a student who has indicated an intention to pursue additional courses in real property law, as broadly defined or interpreted.
  • Class of 1970 Scholarship
    Endowed by members of the Class of 1970 upon the occasion of their 25th reunion, this scholarship is intended for an incoming student who has financial need and shows promise of academic success, with a preference given to residents of Connecticut.
  • Class of 1978 Scholarship
    The Class of 1978 scholarship will be awarded annually starting in 2009-2010 to an outstanding student with financial need. This scholarship was endowed as part of their 30th reunion celebration in 2008.
  • Class of 1980 Scholarship
    Endowed by members of the Class of 1980 upon the occasion of their 25th reunion, this scholarship is intended for a deserving full-time or part-time entering student, taking into account scholarly achievement and potential with preference for a student who has demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is renewable for the duration of a student's time at the Law School.
  • Sarah N. Cohen and Elizabeth S. Bossler Scholarship
    Established in 1985 by Janet B. and Stanley Cohen '63 in honor of their mothers, Sarah N. Cohen and Elizabeth S. Bossler. This endowed scholarship is presented annually to a member of the incoming class who exhibits financial need, and has demonstrated past academic achievement, while also showing promise of academic and professional success.
  • Edward J. Daly, Jr. '57 Scholarship
    Established by Patricia S. Daly in memory of her late husband, Edward J. Daly, Jr. '57, this endowed fund also has received generous support of friends, colleagues and family members, to achieve its purpose of providing a scholarship to an exceptional student.
  • William S. and Aida A. DeMayo Scholarship
    Established by their sons, William S. DeMayo, Jr. and The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo '51, in memory of their parents William and Aida DeMayo, this endowed fund is intended to assist an academically promising first year student.
  • The Herbert and Sarah M. Gibor Charitable Foundation - Wofsey Rosen Kweskin & Kuriansky LLP Scholarship
    This scholarship was established in collaboration with the Stamford-based law firm of Wofsey Rosen Kweskin & Kuriansky LLP and funded by The Gibor Foundation to provide aid to a student who demonstrates promise of academic success and financial need. Preference will be given to students who are working to pay for their own education.
  • Gary R. Ginsberg '58 Family Scholarship
    This scholarship was endowed by Gary R. Ginsberg '58 to provide a scholarship for an entering student who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be shown for a student with a parent or grandparent who graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
  • Winona Grace Dufford '72 Scholarship
    This scholarship was endowed by friends, classmates, and the family of Winona Grace Dufford '72, who died of cancer three years after graduating from the Law School. She had been the first woman appointed to the U.S. Coast Guard as a commissioned legal officer. The scholarship is intended to support a deserving female first year student and to follow her through her time at the Law School.
  • Ralph Gregory Elliot Memorial Scholarship
    The Tyler Cooper & Alcorn Foundation, friends and colleagues established this scholarship upon the death of Ralph Gregory Elliot. Mr. Elliot had been a partner in the firm of Tyler Cooper & Alcorn, LLP and an adjunct professor at the Law School. The scholarship is intended for students at the Law School with preference given to students with undergraduate or other degrees from Yale College.
  • Thomas K. Ellsworth '56 Scholarship
    Family members and friends endowed this scholarship in memory of Thomas K. Ellsworth who had a distinguished legal career, first with the Allstate Insurance Company, then with the Office of the Attorney General of Connecticut, and then as a lawyer in Portland, Connecticut. The scholarship is intended for a student who demonstrates financial need, scholastic ability and, preferably, is a resident of Middlesex County.
  • Frances S. and Marshall S. Feingold '48 Scholarship
    Endowed by Marshall Feingold '48 on the occasion of his 50th Law School reunion and in appreciation for the value of the legal education he received as an evening division student. The purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship for a student who matriculated into the Law School evening division and attended public high school in an urban area, preferably in Connecticut. The selected student shall be known as the Marshall S. and Frances S. Feingold Scholar.
  • First American Title Insurance Company Scholarship
    Funded by the First American Title Insurance Company of Stamford, Connecticut, this scholarship is intended for a deserving second year student with an outstanding record in Property Law.
  • Daniel F. Flynn '62 Memorial Scholarship
    This scholarship was endowed by friends and family to be awarded to a first year student demonstrating the integrity, work ethic, intelligence, and devotion to family, community and country exemplified by the life of Daniel F. Flynn '62 and for whom faith is an important part of his or her life.
  • Fogarty, Cohen, Selby & Nemiroff, LLC Scholarship
    Endowed by the law firm to provide tuition assistance to a deserving second year student, the scholarship is intended for a student with demonstrated academic achievement and who is a resident of Fairfield County.
  • J. Rene Frechette Scholarship
    J. Rene Frechette was associated with Day, Berry & Howard before becoming an attorney and then counsel to CIGNA Corporation, where he made substantial contributions to the employee benefits and health insurance litigation group, particularly in developing areas of federal law. In recognition of those contributions to the legal profession, his friends, colleagues, and family members endowed the J. Rene Scholarship. The scholarship is intended for a student who, through a proper sense of humility and respect for the law, has demonstrated a strong sense of professional responsibility and who, through mastery of a course in Federal Courts or some similarly demanding subject, has demonstrated a scholar's love of the law. Preference is given to veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
  • Charles E. Gooley '78 Memorial Scholarship
    At the time of his death, Mr. Gooley was the president and chief executive officer of Yankee Energy Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities. He also served as an assistant attorney general for Connecticut. Endowed by family, friends and colleagues for the purpose of supporting a deserving first year student, and to follow the student throughout his or her time at the law school, whose potential embodies the remarkable career of Mr. Gooley.
  • William E. Gorbach Scholarship
    Mr. Gorbach was a man who rose above a minimum education to become one of the leaders and innovators in the insurance field. He had limited education himself but always had been interested in the law. He established the first endowed scholarship at the Law School. This scholarship is for a third year student who exhibits motivation, academic achievement and financial need.
  • Jacob and Ethel Greenberg Scholarship
    Endowed through a bequest of Mr. Greenberg, this scholarship is intended for a deserving student.
  • Tom and Eunice Groark Scholarship
    Eunice S. Groark and Thomas J. Groark, Jr. both members of the class of 1965 who met their fist day of law school, endowed this scholarship for the purpose of providing support to an outstanding student.
  • Michele Marilyn Hampton '75 Scholarship
    Michele Marilyn Hampton was a graduate of the University of Connecticut as well as of the Law School. Ms. Hampton just had passed the Connecticut Bar Exam and won her first case with Roberts & Stewart, P.C. in Stamford, Connecticut when she was killed in a car accident. Endowed by classmates, relations and friends in her memory, this fund is intended for a law student who is a graduate of the University of Connecticut who has potential for high academic achievement at the Law School and who has demonstrated financial need.
  • Brenda F. Hauther '82 Scholarship
    Endowed by Brenda F. Hauther '82, together with friends and colleagues, this scholarship provides support for a single parent with child care costs.
  • Joan Hoberman and Harvey Hoberman '60 Scholarship
    Endowed by Harvey Hoberman '60 in memory of his wife, Joan, this scholarship is intended for a student matriculating at the Law School who has substantial full-time, non-academic experience and who exhibits evidence of financial need.George M. and Stella K. Hyman Scholarship
    Endowed by the law firm of Hyman, Harding, Sbarge & Droney, P.C., and friends and family members, this scholarship is intended for a student who has completed two years of law school, exhibited academic excellence in real property, and demonstrated financial need.
  • Jackson Lewis, LLP Labor and Employment Law Scholarship
    This scholarship is awarded to defray the educational expenses of a second- or third-year student who has a demonstrated interest in labor and employment law. In awarding this scholarship, preference will be given to a student who presents a record of leadership in diversity issues or particular promise of substantial and distinctive multicultural contributions to the Law School and the legal profession.
  • Isabel and John P. Jewett '68 Scholarship
    Mr. Jewett is a member of the class of 1968, and Mr. and Mrs. Jewett are the parents of Todd Jewett '06. Isabel and John Jewett endowed this fund to provide scholarships to students with extraordinary promise of making a unique and valuable contribution to the Law School and its mission, while also evidencing financial need.
  • Eugene M. Kagan '56 Scholarship
    Tamara Kagan Levine '81 established this endowed scholarship fund in honor of her father on the occasion of her 25th Law School reunion and her father's 50th Law School reunion in the spring of 2006. Subsequent gifts to the funds from friends and family have continued to celebrate the family's relationship with the School. The scholarship is intended for an incoming, deserving student.
  • Dean Peter A. Lane '67 Scholarship
    This scholarship was endowed by family, friends and colleagues in honor of Dean Peter A. Lane '67 when he died. Since Dean Lane had been a member of the evening division while at Law School and a champion of evening division students while dean, the scholarship is intended for to an evening student to help defray the expense of books.
  • Law Faculty Scholarship
    Dean Nell Jessup Newton, who served as dean from 2000-2006, established this endowed fund with the help of other faculty members. The scholarship is intended to provide scholarship assistance to a student at the Law School.
  • Law School Alumni Association Scholarship
    This scholarship is an annual award to an incoming first-year student on the basis of academic achievement and potential for contribution to the legal profession. Preference is given to a student who demonstrates financial need.
  • Law Women's Association Scholarship
    In 1978 the Law Women's Association endowed this scholarship. It is intended for a female student with child care responsibilities and financial need.
  • Eileen and Peter A. Litwin '72 Scholarship
    Mr. Litwin is a member of the class of 1972. The Litwin's son, Nathan P. Litwin, is a member of the class of 2003. This endowed scholarship is intended for a first year student in need of financial assistance who demonstrates an interest in public and social service.
  • Hugh C. Macgill Endowed Scholarship
    Endowed by colleagues and friends upon the occasion of Dean Hugh C. Macgill's retirement as dean, this scholarship is intended for an incoming student who gives promise of academic success.
  • Tyrone Moore Scholarship
    The Honorable Sheridan L. Moore '78 and friends and colleagues endowed this scholarship to honor the memory of her brother, Tyrone Moore. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving first year student, and will follow that student into his or her second year at the law school.
  • Joseph F. Noonan '48 Memorial Scholarship
    Established by friends and family of Joseph F. Noonan, including his nephew Joseph C. Zemetis '80, this endowed fund was established to assist an academically promising student. The scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the school administration based primarily on evidence of financial need, academic promise, character and a commitment to helping others, with a strong preference for a student who otherwise might not be financially capable of attending law school.
  • Ellen Ash Peters Prize Scholarship
    Dean and Professor of Law and Business, Emeritus, Phillip I. Blumberg endowed the Ellen Ash Peters Prize Scholarship in honor of his wife, Chief Justice (Ret.) of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Justice Peters is a graduate of Swarthmore College. The scholarship is intended for a member of the entering class of the Law School who graduated from Swarthmore College and whose academic record gives promise of high scholarly achievement.
  • Morris Pomp Memorial Scholarship
    Established by Richard D. Pomp, Alva P. Loiselle Professor of Law, in memory of his father Morris Pomp, to be awarded to a deserving first year student. The selected student is to be referred to as the Morris Pomp Scholar.
  • Anthony J. Smits International Scholarship
    This scholarship was established in memory of Anthony J. Smits LL.M. '98, a member of the Law School Foundation Board of Trustees and adjunct faculty member. Mr. Smits' success as a lawyer was celebrated by his colleagues at Bingham McCutchen LLP, and his prowess as a bankruptcy and insolvency lawyer recognized worldwide. With the generosity of many friends and family, this endowed fund provides one or more scholarships for international students in the U.S. Legal Studies LL.M. Program at the Law School.
  • The St. Paul Travelers Scholarship
    This scholarship is awarded to a student who is a Connecticut resident and a graduate of an urban high school and includes a summer in the company's law department.
  • United Technologies Legal Department Scholarship
    Established with the support of the attorneys of the United Technologies Legal Department, some donors are graduates and some are not, together with the generous matching gifts provided by UTC. This endowed fund provides a scholarship for a student who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and personal qualities that will contribute to a successful legal career. To the extent that they are otherwise eligible for the scholarship, preference is given to employees of UTC and their children.
  • Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. Scholarship
    Established by the Hartford-based law firm of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. this endowed scholarship provides support for an incoming student who has financial need and shows promise of academic success.
  • I. Milton Widem '55 Memorial Scholarship
    Endowed by family, colleagues and friends in memory of I. Milton Widem '55, this scholarship provides support of a first year student, with preference given to a student enrolled in the evening division.
  • Rose Wolfson Scholarship
    Professor Emeritus Nicholas Wolfson endowed this scholarship in honor of his mother, Rose Wolfson, this fund supports a scholarship for a deserving student at the Law School.
