Instructions for Applying for Admission

The Deadline for Applications is March 1, 2010. APPLICATIONS POSTMARKED OR RELEASED AFTER MARCH 1, 2010 WILL BE RETURNED.

The Application for Admission consists of the Application Form and required attachments, the Residency Affidavit and College Certification. All forms must be completed fully according to their accompanying directions. All required application forms and documentation must be received electronically and uploaded in the order requested. All applications must be electronically certified.

1.      Complete the Application for Admission fully. All applicants should submit each required document as an electronic attachment. Please do not follow up with a hard copy of your application. All essays and documents submitted for consideration must be properly numbered, have the applicant's name and LSAC account number at the top of each page, and be submitted electronically.

a)      Applicants are required to submit a complete résumé including military service and summer employment. All résumés must be current up to the date of the application.

b)      Applicants must provide a listing of every college and university, graduate and professional school attended, (including any enrollment, however brief, at any law school), whether or not credit was received, including the dates of attendance, major, degree and date degree was awarded.

c)      All applicants must answer question 13. Applicants responding in the affirmative must provide an essay fully explaining the circumstances surrounding the charge or conviction as well as copies of documentation (police and/or court records) for all such charges and/or convictions. Your file will remain incomplete until we receive the required documentation.

d)      Applications must include a direct response to question 14. Applicants choosing to submit an optional essay (question 15) should also submit an appropriate essay in response to that question.

Note that many state bar examining committees require copies of your law school applications; should your responses to us be different than your response to the bar examiners, it may result in a character and fitness hearing. For information regarding the Bar Examination including Character and Fitness please visit: http://www.law.uconn.edu/student-handbook/admission-bar.

2.      The application fee is nonrefundable. All applicants for admission, regardless of division, are required to pay a non refundable fee of sixty dollars ($60.00). If you receive a fee waiver from LSAC your application fee will be waived. Please submit a copy of your LSAC fee waiver documentation directly to the Law School via email.

3.      Register for the LSAT and the LSAC Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS). An LSAT taken prior to June, 2005 or after February, 2010 will be invalid for 2010 admission.

4.      Authentication and Evaluation for International Students. The University of Connecticut School of Law requires that your foreign transcripts be submitted through the LSAC Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) Authentication and Evaluation service.  If you were directly enrolled at an institution outside the US, its territories, or Canada and the total amount of work you completed at all such institutions combined is the equivalent of more than one year of bachelor's-level study in the US, its territories, or Canada, you must use this service.

To use the LSAC’s Authentication and Evaluation Service, you must register for the Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) and you must request that the appropriate documents (e.g., mark sheets, academic records, diplomas, degree certifications, transcripts) be sent directly to LSAC from the institution(s) you attended.

All applicants completing their Bachelor’s degree from an institution outside the United States and whose education was in a language other than English, must submit a TOEFL score. To include your TOEFL score with the LSDAS report, you must contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and request that your TOEFL score be sent to LSAC.  LSAC’s TOEFL code for the JD Credential Assembly Service is 0058.  Your score will then be included in the Foreign Credential Evaluation document that will be included in your LSDAS report.

Further information regarding authentication and evaluation for International students please visit: http://www.lsac.org/Applying/lsdas-jdcas-educated-outside.asp.

5.      The University of Connecticut School of Law requires that your letters of recommendation be submitted through LSAC’s Letter of Recommendation Service (LOR). This service is included in your LSDAS registration. Your letters will be copied and sent to us along with your LSDAS report. To use this service, follow the directions for submitting letters outlined at www.LSAC.org or in the LSAT & LSDAS Information Book. Be sure to fill out and give each letter writer a letter of recommendation form from www.LSAC.org.

Please note that we will not receive a copy of your LSDAS report from LSAC until at least two letters of recommendation are in your file at LSAC. If you elect to send a supplemental letter of recommendation to the law school, be advised that the letter of recommendation forms found online or in the LSAT & LSDAS Registration Packet must be completed by you and one should be sent in for each supplemental letter. Our preference is to receive supplemental letters electronically. Do not forward duplicate hard copies of letters of recommendation to the Law School. While the Admissions Office accepts up to four letters of recommendation, your file will be considered complete once the first two letters have been received.

The committee prefers letters from people who know you well. Recent graduates should submit two academic letters of recommendation. The committee may also request additional letters of recommendation if it feels that they might provide greater detail and insight.

6.      Complete the Residency Affidavit and submit it with your application. All applicants, regardless of state of permanent residency, are required to submit the Residency Affidavit.

7.      Submit a complete College Certification form. Your file will remain incomplete until the complete College Certification form is received. Complete and sign the applicant portion of the College Certification form and submit it to the appropriate office at your undergraduate degree-granting school. Please note, for some institutions the Pre-law Advisor, Dean of Students, or Office of the Registrar may be the appropriate office to complete this form. If your school has its own certification form, the law school will accept that. Applicants from such schools must still complete the applicant section of our form and return it with their application. Note: An official or certified transcript does not replace the College Certification. Once the College Certification is completed by your undergraduate degree granting institution, the form must be returned to the University of Connecticut School of Law. All College Certifications should be sent electronically, if possible, to the admissions office at admissions@law.uconn.edu.

8.      All applications and required forms (with the exception of the College Certification which must go to your undergraduate institution) must be certified electronically by the applicant. Applicants have an ongoing obligation to notify the Admissions Office of any changes in information and address not noted in the application.

9.      Applications are accepted for admission after September 1, 2009, and must be postmarked or released no later than March 1, 2010. All deposit deadlines must be met by admitted applicants in order to preserve their offers of admission. The School of Law reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission if the applicant fails to maintain satisfactory scholastic standing for work in progress, if final records fail to show completion of courses and/or degrees required for admission, or if the admission decision was based on incomplete or inaccurate information furnished by the applicant.

10.  All applicants wishing to be considered for need based assistance including Opportunity Grants and Tuition Remission, must submit their Application and related materials for Financial Assistance by March 1, 2010. This deadline must be met even if you do not yet have an admissions decision. Applications for Financial Assistance are processed by the Student Finance office. All admissions decisions are rendered without regard to need. Details about financial aid requirements can be found at http://www.law.uconn.edu/content/student-finance-office.
