Information for Exchange Students

Welcome to the University of Connecticut School of Law! We are pleased that you have been accepted as an Exchange Student at the University of Connecticut School of Law.

This information is intended to assist you in making your plans to come to Connecticut. Although we have tried to anticipate many of your questions, we welcome hearing from you about any individual concerns. Our hope is that this marks the beginning of a productive and enjoyable year for you here.

As soon as possible, please complete and return the following forms:

  1. the Notice of Intention with supporting documentation so that we may begin processing your J-1 visa application
  2. the Financial Declaration Form
  3. the Request Form for Issuance of DS-2019
  4. the Bio/Demographic Data Sheet
  5. the Immunization Form. You and your doctor will need to complete the Immunization Form.
  6. Enrollment Request Form. If you have not already sent in a list of courses that you would like to take at UCONN, please view the course offerings. Select three or four first choices and two second choices and enter them on the Enrollment Request Form. Please fax (1.860.570.5366) or mail the completed form back to Blanche Capilos at: UCONN Law School, 65 Elizabeth Street, Hartford, CT 06105 USA.

All courses that are open to J.D. candidates are open to Exchange Students as well. Students may select courses from among the many U.S. and International Law courses offered as part of the Law School's extensive curriculum. Exchange Students may take introductory courses, or, if they prefer, they may take a more advanced level of study. Only a few courses have prerequisites. Exchange Students may also participate in the various legal clinics at the Law School.

All exchange students are required to attend Orientation. We will be sending you the Orientation Schedule at a later date. Please notify us of the date you expect to arrive in the U.S. and your flight information as soon as possible.

You will be entering the U.S. on a J-1 visa. Mihwa Lee, the university's visa officer, is in charge of handling J visas on-campus. If you have any questions about your visa, please contact her.

All other exchange questions should be directed to Blanche Capilos. The faculty Director of the International Exchange Programs is Professor Willajeanne McLean.

As there is no on-campus housing at the Law School, we will find furnished accommodations for you within walking distance of the Law School. I will let you know later in the summer what is available. The monthly rental rates in our area are $450-$500 per month.

Please also see the International Student Organizations (International Law Society, LSA, SALSA, ALSA, BALSA).

Again, congratulations! We hope you have a pleasant summer and a safe passage to Hartford. We look forward to meeting you in August.

If you have any difficulty with the forms or other questions, please contact:

Health Insurance

As a condition of admission and registration ALL international students will be required, at the time of registration, to show evidence of adequate insurance coverage for basic medical, major medical, and repatriation expenses. Students should consult the International Exchange Office regarding compliance with this requirement and assistance in enrolling in an approved insurance program.

Housing

We are fortunate at the School of Law to be located within a very attractive residential area of Hartford known as the West End. Although we do not have any on-campus housing, there are several blocks of Victorian houses and small apartment buildings within a ten-minute walk of the campus. Upon arriving in Hartford, you will be met at the airport or bus station and brought directly to your apartment or house.

You will be assigned housing. It is very difficult to locate affordable, furnished short-term leased apartments in the area. The apartments that we have reserved for our international students are fully furnished including dishes and kitchen utensils. The only items you may need to bring or purchase are linens (sheets and towels). These are the by far the nicest, cleanest, and cost effective apartments available in the area.

We have made arrangements with local homeowners and property managers to offer a limited number of furnished apartments and rooms to exchange students for four months. Typically, a furnished room with shared bath and kitchen in a West End family's home is available for $450 - $500 per month including utilities.

In the United States, all renters must pay a security deposit. Security deposits are usually equal to one month's rent and are payable prior to move-in. If there are no damages when you move out of your apartment at the end of your lease, your security deposit will be refunded. Each student is required to pay a security deposit and August's pro-rated rent upon arrival.

The Law School does not assume any responsibility for either the owner's or the student's contractual obligations.

Course Information

During Orientation, we will meet with you individually to discuss your course selections and advise you. Keep in mind that you may change your initial registration choices after you arrive. The first two weeks of each semester is the "add/drop" period for international students during which you are allowed to change your class registrations. Students use this time to attend the classes in which they are pre-registered and to decide if they want to take them for credit. You can also attend classes for which you are not registered to determine whether you would like to take these courses instead of the ones you have pre-registered for. If you decide to change your initial registration, you can obtain the necessary add/drop forms from the Registrar's Office. Keep in mind that a class you may want to add may already be filled or closed. Once the add/drop period is over, you are responsible for these courses and exams. You may not add any additional courses or drop any that you are registered during that semester.
