Hartford
"Hartford offers an exciting combination
of private and public insurance institutions in a city of manageable size
and strategic location."
- George
Schatzki, Professor of Law
and former Dean of the Law School, teacher of labor law and the legal profession
Strategically located on the Connecticut River between Boston and New York, Hartford has been home to scores of insurance companies formed in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. For that reason, Hartford long has claimed the title of Insurance Capital of the United States.
Hartford is also the capital of the State of Connecticut and the home of Connecticut's Legislature and Insurance Department. In the United States, the primary responsibility for the regulation of insurance is exercised by state governments. So Hartford provides not only a window on the operation of some of the world's largest private insurance organizations, but also a window overlooking government regulation of insurance.
Hartford's insurance district is a short distance from the Law School, as are the Insurance Department, the Legislature, the State's Supreme and Appellate Courts, and the city's many law firms engaged in one aspect or another of insurance law. New York City, the financial capital of the world and an important insurance center, is just over two hours away by car. And Boston, a leading academic center that is home to both insurance companies and state government, is less than two hours distant. Hartford is, indeed, a unique insurance crossroads.
