Cover of Best's Review Robert R. Googins `61, Adjunct Professor of Law and Founding Director, Insurance Law Center.

The issues of today for the decision-makers of tomorrow. For over twenty years, the Insurance Institute has been a joint undertaking of the The University of Connecticut Law School Foundation, Inc. and major insurance companies in the Hartford area. Each fall, the Institute sponsors a three- to four-day seminar that provides an overview of the insurance industry. The seminar offers the lawyer who is new to insurance problems an introduction to a wide variety of legal concepts and issues faced in private practice, in the law departments of insurance and other financial services companies, and in regulatory agencies. The seminar offers the lawyer who is experienced in insurance problems an opportunity to stay abreast of recent developments in the field.

Recent seminars have addressed such topics as the principles of and recent developments in health insurance, health care delivery, life insurance, annuities, market conduct, property casualty insurance, reinsurance, insurance taxation, securities law, antitrust, investment practices, claims and litigation management, and insurance regulation. The faculty include a wide range of recognized experts in the field.

Among the recurring themes addressed at the seminar are the boundaries between state and federal regulation, the legal and regulatory consequences of the ongoing restructuring of the financial services sector of the global economy, the tensions inherent in delivering complex financial services in a highly competitive environment, and the role of the lawyer in this changing world.

As with all continuing education programs at the Insurance Law Center, the Insurance Institute is open to lawyers and other professionals regardless of their area of practice or affiliation. Students enrolled in the Insurance Law LL.M. program are encouraged to participate in the Institute.
