Lawyers and judges are linguistic interpretation specialists of sorts, yet few legal professionals have any formal training in the workings of language. This seminar will consider whether and how insights from the cognitive sciences (especially linguistics and philosophy of language) might inform the interpretation of speech and text in various legal contexts, such as statutory construction, contract, and witness testimony.
