Lgl Imag: Lawyer Orator/Writer

  • Class number: 15264
  • Term: Fall 2012
  • Instructor:

This course will invite you to use your imagination to explore what it means to think, speak, and write like a lawyer. You will compare what lawyers say and how they write with what other people have said and written in similar circumstances or on similar subjects. Our focus will be on what lawyers do with words, and our comparisons will help us to expose unexpressed assumptions and unique characteristics that define legal discourse and legal writing. You will be asked to speak and write as a lawyer in society in traditional roles such as that of counselor, advocate, negotiator, legislator, and judge. You will also be asked to explore yourself intellectually and emotionally. You will utilize your own voice and individual point of view to speak and write about what lawyers do in these roles and what this may mean to you as you consider what makes the law and the life of a lawyer interesting, fulfilling, and of value to you.
