The course will focus on issues of contemporary importance. Topics may include: the desirability of video-taping all police interrogations; the federal grand jury and Connecticut alternatives to the grand jury; federal sentencing guidelines; prosecutorial discretion; the federalization of criminal law; capital punishment; public corruption; the sunset of the Patriot Act.

- Notes: The 2009-2010 course will be co-taught by Leonard Orland, Oliver Ellsworth Professor of Law and Kevin O'Connor, formerly Associate Attorney General of the United States. In addition to the topics mentioned in the course description, depending on availability, possible additional topics that may be explored in conversations with distinguished guests are: (1) White House Counsel Perspectives on Terrorism and Financial Meltdown. (2) Corporate Counsel Perspectives on Internal Investigations, Corporate Criminal Liability, Financial Meltdown, and Negotiating with the Justice Department. (3) Special Federal Prosecutor Perspectives on Destruction of Guantanamo Video Tapes, Firing of Us Attorneys, and Conduction Grand Jury Investigations. (4) U.S. Attorney Perspectives on Prosecutorial Priorities and Grand Jury Investigations. (5) Defense Counsel Perspectives on Deferred Corporate Criminal Prosecution Agreements, Defending Corporate Executives Accused of Crime, Responding to Investigations, and Plea Bargaining. Interested students may increase the credit load of this course to three credits with the addition of a short paper.
