This is an optional seminar for students simultaneously enrolled in an individual externship. Through assigned reading, class discussions and exercises, we will explore practical and ethical issues encountered in a wide variety of externship settings, including the meaning and limits of zealous advocacy, workplace etiquette and problem solving, and effective communication. Students will be required to reflect critically upon their own experiences as well as those of others; to organize and lead one or more class discussions; to keep a written journal as required in all individual externships; and to write two brief reflection papers. Students participating in this seminar will earn a maximum of four credits total for the seminar and the co-required individual externship. All students must perform at least 150 hours of field work in their individual externship. Corequisite: Individual Externship (LAW 996).
