Surplus Insurance Lines
- Class number: 12415
- Term: Spring 2006
- Instructor:
This course will survey the development and regulation of financial insurance and alternative risk products that reflect the convergence of insurance risk offerings with products offered by financial institutions such as commercial and investment banks. We will examine the competitive forces in the financial and insurance markets that drive the development of alternate insurance products. We will examine recent developments in the insurance market such as terrorism coverage and review the financial insurance debacles surrounding the collapse of various insurance structures. In addition, we will examine the ramifications of the insurance insolvencies that have occurred with insurers engaged in the alternative risk market. Particular attention will be paid to the regulation of financial insurance products with a review of surplus lines regulation, captive programs, large risk and credit insurance products, the development of off-shore insurance vehicles and the convergence of new financial products with insurance principles. In addition to a final exam or term paper, there will be mock negotiation sessions and other oral assignments during the semester. Grading will be heavily dependent on class participation in this course.
