Entertainment Law

This course explores some of the legal, business and policy issues that lawyers encounter in the music, film, and television industries. Topics include, but are not limited to, copyright and trademark issues in the entertainment industry; conflicts of interest and other legal ethics issues; contractual rights and relations among entertainment industry workers in television, motion pictures, and recordings, including agency and management agreements; an analysis of the economic structure of the entertainment industry; and a survey of the various unions, societies and guilds, including but not limited to, the Writers Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, American Federation of Musicians and Actors Equity, BMI, SESAC and ASCAP. The course also addresses issues relating to estate planning, real estate and bankruptcy law. Students will participate in a mock recording contract negotiation.
