Year/Semester Abroad: Trademark Law and IP in KYUNGPOOK

Our program with Kyungpook National University (KNU) in Daegu, South Korea was established in 2006. It is designed to give students a chance to study Trademark Law and IP in a Korean Law School. Kyungpook is situated in the southeastern part of Korea and is less than two hours by express train from Seoul. Daegu is the third largest city in Korea with a population of approximately 2.5 million.

Eligibility

The program is designed for students matriculating at the University of Connecticut School of Law. First and second year day division students are eligible to apply to study abroad during their second or third year. Evening division students and four-year students are eligible to apply in their second or third year to study abroad during their third or fourth year. Classes are offered in English.

Course of Study

Students who wish to study abroad for one semester may attend school in Kyungpook during the Fall or Spring semester. The Fall semester starts at the end of August and runs through mid December. Spring semester starts the first week of March and ends in mid June. Students taking four courses in the Kyungpook program earn a total of twelve credits for a semester of work abroad. The ABA has also approved study abroad credit for a full year. Connecticut students must take eight courses to be eligible for the full twenty-four credits. Kyungpook offers internship opportunities after the completion of the semester.

Students will be examined and graded as are all other students at Kyungpook. Credit will be awarded for all courses in which a passing grade is received. Grades are not listed on the Connecticut transcript, but credit for those courses passed is noted. No mention is made nor credit given for failed courses. Credits are not averaged as part of the student's GPA. Kyungpook uses a 100 point scale and grades are based on five categories, A, B, C,D, and F with plus or minus. Grades C- (70-73) and above will be considered passing.

Cost

Students pay tuition directly to the UCONN Law School Business Office. You will be charged for 12 study abroad credits and a Study Abroad Fee of $475 to help defray the administrative expense of the program.

Costs for housing and other associated living expenses are detailed in the accompanying materials in the Kyungpook notebook on reserve in the Library (rent per month is approximately $100 for university housing). The International Office assists with accommodations. The earlier you apply, the better your chances are of getting housing.

The University and City

Kyungpook National University is a well-known university in south Korea Whose main campus is located in the city of Daegu. The institution is regarded as one of the strongest regional universities in the country. KNU's history traces back to the period immediately following World War II. In 1946, the institution was established as a National College and included a College of Education, College of Medicine and College of Agriculture. The institution expanded in the 1950's, when a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Law and Political Science were added. In 1951, it became known officially as Kyungpook National University. KNU's first overseas academic cooperative relationship was initiated with the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973. And in 1982, the College of Law and Political Science was renamed as the College of Law.

Daegu is an educational and cultural city with historical links to the Silla Culture and Choseon Confucianism. It is also known as the Green and Fashion city and a key center for regional industrial development. Daegu offers easy access to many famous tourist attractions: one hour to Gyeongju City, a museum without walls including ancient remains from the Silla Kingdom, or one hour to Hawinsa Temple, which houses a collection of more than 80,000 wooden Buddhist scriptures that has been declared an International Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is 300 km from Seoul, less than two hours by express train.

Foreign study in Kyungpook will not be canceled due to lack of enrollment. Should Kyungpook National University decide to cancel the program, Connecticut students will then register for regular classes at the School of Law. In the event that cancellation occurs after the pre-registration period for the semester in question, every effort will be made to accommodate student preferences in registering for classes.
